Maxxima is currently seeking an experienced Band 6 Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry to fill a full-time role in Surrey.
The starting pay rate for this locum BMS job is £23.00 to £25.00 per hour and is an ongoing role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Biochemistry Laboratory services
* To ensure knowledge of all instrumentation is up to date and that the post holder is capable of operating such equipment after training eg Beckman Coulter DxC 600 / 800; Beckman Coulter Access II, Beckman Coulter Immage 800, Abbott Architect, Sebia Capillarys and Hydrasys, Bio-Rad D10, Siemens Clinitek, Osmometer and any new equipment acquired.
* To be able to work within all areas of the department eg sample reception, data entry, core automated analysis, tumour markers, specific proteins, data transfer and manual testing as required with the minimum of direct supervision.
Sample reception: Receipt and checking of samples against request forms, liaising with ward staff where there are doubts, filling in incident forms and dealing with leaking / damaged samples
Data entry: Logging incoming specimen requests on to the TD and HIS, dealing with errors in labelling, correctly assigning work to be sent outside.
Core automated analysis: Prepare the DxC 600/800 with reagent and consumable loading, calibrate as required, run and assess quality control material (referring to senior staff if required), program and load patient specimens, assess results produced, troubleshooting (referring to senior staff if required) and carry out maintenance.
Tumour markers: Prepare the Architect with reagent and consumable loading, calibrate as required, run and assess quality control material ( referring to senior staff if required), prepare work lists using cumulative records to assist in dilutions, program and load patient specimens, assess results produced, troubleshooting ( referring to senior staff if required), check results for authorisation by senior staff.
Specific proteins: Collect specimens from reception, retrieve cumulative records, run samples in accordance with SOP, prepare Immage, Capillarys and Hydrasys for operation, prepare work list, load and run QC and samples, carryout manual techniques( fixation) as required ( referring to senior staff ), compile and prepare reports prior to authorisation by senior staff, input data into TD and file reports after authorisation
Data transfer: Requiring the correlation of data from different analysers, viewing all captured and inputted data on the TD, input error codes and validate results, alerting doctors and nurses of any results outside critical limits. Viewing and recording of QC results for core analysis.
Manual testing: Operating the osmometer, assessing QC, determining if calibration is required. Performing urianalysis. Performing pregnancy testing required for immediate treatment of the patient. Performing occult blood testing.
Fulham biochemistry cover: To operate the satellite service at the Chelsea site with no direct senior supervision. Carry out sample reception, analysis of samples maintaining turnaround times and ensure timely dispatch of the samples to the Sutton site according to standard operating procedures.
Waste disposal: Disposing of all biological, sharps and domestic waste appropriately in accordance with SOP's and instructions.
All applicants must have relevant experience of working within an NHS or Private Pathology Laboratory. Candidates must have their HCPC registration and also a Valid Working Holiday Visa, Ancestry Visa or EU Citizenship.
