Maxxima is currently seeking an experienced Band 6 Biomedical Scientist in Haematology/Blood Transfusion to fill a full-time role in Birmingham.

The starting pay rate for this locum BMS job is £23.00 to £25.00 per hour and is an ongoing role.

Key Result Areas & Performance:
*To perform complex clinical tests and investigations associated with diagnosis and monitoring while ensuring that workflow patterns are maintained and that sample analyses are within the specification required of the laboratory service.

*To perform analytical tests on biological material which, by their nature, may be highly infectious, adhering to approved safe practice at all times.

*To carry a bleep where necessary and work unsupervised and alone where necessary and to participate fully in the 24/7 shift rota system.

*To troubleshoot, check and repair equipment where appropriate.

*To notify senior laboratory staff/medical staff/healthcare professionals when specimen integrity is in question or the accuracy of an analytical result is compromised.

*To bring to the attention of senior laboratory staff, medical and technical, any test results which are grossly abnormal.

*To prioritise specimen analysis with respect to urgency and specimen size, according to departmental protocols.

*To act as a cross-check for ensuring accuracy of manual reporting.

*To ensure that all internal quality control procedures for tests being undertaken are correctly applied and that corrective action is taken where significant variance occurs.

*To maintain, performance monitor and troubleshoot any departmental instrumentation.

*To maintain, performance monitor and troubleshoot the Point of Care equipment.

*For Haematology Point of Care, to move and install reagent packs (21k weight).

*To carry out daily, weekly and monthly schedules and ad hoc maintenance procedures on analytical equipment.

*To troubleshoot control and sample errors, using analyser software and protocols.

*To ensure that analytical areas are kept appropriately stocked with reagents and consumables at all times and that workbenches are kept clean and tidy.

*To assist in the evaluation and implementation of new methodology and reagents.

*To be responsible for compatibility testing and the safe issue of blood and blood products for transfusion.

*To issue Anti-D for injection as required.

Requirements of the Biomedical Scientist role:

All applicants must have relevant experience of working within an NHS or Private Pathology Laboratory. Candidates must have their HCPC registration and also a Valid Working Holiday Visa, Ancestry Visa or EU Citizenship.
