Maxxima are currently recruiting for candidates to work as a Regional Laboratory Manger to undertake Covid-19 testing for a private client of ours in Cambridgeshire

The successful candidate will be ideally have three year's experience in management role in a diagnostic or industrial setting. The succesful candidate will be looking to lead a Regional Laboratory ensuring the timely, effective and accurate processing of samples analysing these for the presence of pathogens (particularly SARS-CoV-2). To effectively identify and manager issues during the working day – dealing with these as needed and to escalate these to the Director of Laboratories. To lead staff welfare for all staff operating from that Regional Laboratory.


Essential Skills

Demonstrable experience working in a biology, biochemistry or chemistry laboratory.
Demonstrable experience working core laboratory techniques including pipetting samples, sample handling, liquid handling, reagent preparation and the use of and set up of laboratory automation systems
Working in a laboratory requiring the use of PPE to protect yourself and the integrity of the laboratory
Performing biological assays in a scientific research or diagnostic laboratory
Working in a laboratory flexibly across multiple projects/assays
Use of laboratory information management system
Working in an ISO accredited laboratory (9001, 17025, 15189)
Working in a laboratory handling potentially infectious samples or other hazardous material
Competent in the use of asceptic techniques in sample handling and management.
Awareness of and trained in the requirements of the Human Tissue Act
Significant management experience of staff in a laboratory either as a Supervisor, Section Head or Laboratory Manager.
Working in a qPCR laboratory
Nucleic acid extraction experience
Working within a high throughput sample processing environment with laboratory automation
 


Principle Responsibilities

1.                To undertake specific training, re-training and development to be proficient in the processes, standards, SOPs to process, handle, and prepare samples for analysis
2.                To manage the laboratory overall and when needed during a shift to ensure the timely, accurate and effective processing of samples
3.                To ensure the correct staffing at all times and to lead the recruitment and on-boarding of all staff in that laboratory.
4.                To assist in the processing, handling, and preparation samples for analysis
5.                To undertake the review of samples results from analysis software, clearing batches of results for reporting, and escalating inconclusive results according to the testing protocols.
6.                To lead the maintenance and cleaning of the laboratory to maintain standards necessary to meet the prevailing standards during the shift.
7.                To lead the reviewing of inventory levels of PPE, reagents, and consumables for each shift and to report these to the central logistics group to ensure timely resupply.
8.                To lead, assist, or undertake the validation and calibration of equipment in the laboratory
9.                To lead and/or assist in onsite staff training and development and the roll out of new processes and techniques
10.              To assist in the training of managers from other Regional Laboratories in the processes, standards and techniques


Desirable Skills 
 
- Experience with Viral RNA testing using (RT) PCR methodology
- Experience with end-point PCR
- Using liquid handling robots such as Tecan
-  Experience of health and safety regulations
- Higher level qualifications or accreditation such as a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist, MRes or Higher Specialist Portfolio
