Maxxima are currently recruiting for a a Scientific Advisor with the DHSC to work on Lab Validation and Quality Assurance

The Team

The Laboratories Validation and Assurance Group consists of a team of Scientific Advisors together with project management resources to support the work of the group   The core function of the group is to contribute to the onboarding of new Covid testing laboratories for Pillar 2 (mass testing) focussing on the adherence to ISO 15189/17025 standards and providing scientific support to validation and verification of assays and end to end processing. In addition, the team support ongoing Quality Improvement through regular contact with the laboratories to review incidents and implementation of corrective actions.  
Job description
A central Laboratory Validation and Quality Assurance Team, reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, assures the operational readiness of all Pillar 2 laboratories (including surge capacity) to provide high quality, validated, accurate and safe SARS Cov-2 testing services. This includes RT- PCR, ePCR, Direct LAMP and RNA LAMP, Reflex Tests and Genomic Sequencing in alignment with UKAS ISO 15189 or 17025 standards using an in-house validation and assurance process (including live audits).
It also provides ongoing quality assurance and provides scientific advice to Test & Trace on quality assurance requirements for implementing new testing technologies, automation and strategies and new laboratory environments, including decommissioning (e.g. data retention).  Ongoing assurance activities include:
  • Standards Compliance: Oversee and monitor continued compliance with the above standards with the Laboratory Clinical Directors and Quality Managers: using the principles of quality development and improvement, monitor and review incidents, identify trends, share best practice, and support laboratories to work towards full UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189/17025 standards.
  • Change Control: Ensure laboratories document changes and obtain approval through the change control process.
  • Quality management: Completion of technical and quality audits to inform continuous improvement.
It is worth noting, due to the dynamic nature of the operating environment, duties and responsibilities may change at short notice and in response to the operational and strategic demands associated with the evolving mandate of UKHSA.
Person specification
As well as experience of the above the successful candidate will have:
  • Strong stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Be able to work on their own as well as part of team.
  • Be a good communicator, both written and verbal.
  • Be able to analyse data and recommend correct action and/or improvements.
