Molecular Scientists, Laboratory Managers and Senior Biomedical Scientists join the national endeavour to help combat Covid-19. 

Maxxima are currently recruiting for candidates to work as a Laboratory Shift Manager to undertake Covid-19 testing for Test and Trace for temporary mobile laboratories across the country. This is for an on-going project that involves an initial 2-week deployment in teams to either the North Yorkshire, Lancashire or Suffolk areas. After the 2 week deployment – these teams will then manoeuvre to other locations (as yet, unassigned), so teams will need to be prepared to stay overnight if/when required. Teams will be working in close proximity in purpose-built environment and will be undertaking tasks that require high levels of attention to detail. Potential candidates will undertake Initial training and assessment that will take place in Guildford at a fixed location, likely lasting for 2 days.
Candidates will need to disclose:
  1. which initial area they are best suited to cover (North Yorkshire, Lancashire or Suffolk)
  2. that they are flexible to move locations
  3. That they would be free to undertake training / assessment days in Guildford w/c 16th of November
  4. Can commit to this on-going role until at least April 2021

The successful candidate will be ideally have three year's experience in management role in a diagnostic or industrial setting. Laboratory Shift Managers will oversee and manage the daily end to end testing process to a safe and efficient standard, in line with the laboratory accreditation specifications.
Laboratory Shift Managers should be extremely competent in the management, training and assessment of staff in their section in line with the laboratory procedures. Individuals in this role will also be expected to create and review documents such as SOPs as well as ensuring and reviewing compliance to quality or health and safety requirements. 

Essential Skills

- Extensive experience in a variety of PCR  and molecular methods
- Proven experience of managing people
- Experience of training and supervising laboratory staff
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to troubleshoot

Principle Responsibilities

- Line managing Senior Laboratory Technicians and junior staff on the shift
- Responsible for the training and development of junior staff
- Maintaining laboratory documents and procedures in line with ISO15189:2012 / ISO17025:2019 laboratory accreditation specification
- Troubleshoot laboratory procedures in the PCR process and carry out appropriate actions and investigations

Desirable Skills 
- Experience with Viral RNA testing using (RT) PCR methodology
- Experience with end-point PCR
- Using liquid handling robots such as Tecan
-  Experience of health and safety regulations
- Higher level qualifications or accreditation such as a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist, MRes or Higher Specialist Portfolio

The Pay rate for this role is between £38k to £51k per annum
