How much does a nurse earn?
A nurse’s salary differs depending on level of experience, whether they work for the NHS or in a private healthcare facility, and the band of pay in which they are placed. For example, while a newly qualified nurse might be in band 5, a nurse practitioner may be in band 7.
-
Band 3 £11-15+
per hour umbrella
-
Band 5 £17-22+

-
Band 6 £23-28+

-
Band 7 £28-40+

Working as a locum nurse
Health workers often work long and anti-social hours which is why many qualified nurses explore locum work. As a locum nurse, you’ll receive many benefits you wouldn’t get working in a full-time position. A locum position allows you a flexible working lifestyle - being your own boss gives you the ability to control your own hours.
A common concern for workers considering locum positions is the potential lack of work. As the demand is so high in care homes and hospitals, as a locum nurse, it’s likely you’ll be in demand for regular work.
If you are considering temporary nursing positions, it is worth considering the implications of not being on a pay roll – such as no sick pay, holiday pay or maternity/paternity leave.
