Responsible for: To provide overarching management of all UK Biocentre Laboratories (including COVID19 and diagnostics)  and technical management to support the laboratories accreditation to ISO15189:2012 activities.

The Laboratory, based in Buckinghamshire, has been repurposed as a high throughput diagnostic laboratory for the testing of SARS-CoV-2 RNA using real-time (RT) PCR methodology (a so-called “Lighthouse” lab). The laboratory is looking to extend its diagnostic portfolio and is also preparing an application to UKAS to be accredited to ISO15189:2012 (a pre-assessment visit has already been carried out).
This senior role will provide the laboratory with an individual with extensive experience in managing a diagnostic laboratory accredited to ISO15189:2012.
Working closely with laboratory shift managers and senior biomedical scientists, they will ensure that lab processes are carried out safely, efficiently and to the quality standards required of ISO15189:2012 laboratory accreditation. They will have direct line management responsibility for Shift Managers, Senior Biomedical Scientists and the laboratory training manager.

  1. Post-graduate qualification (eg MSc / Ph.D).
  2. Evidence of higher management training.
  3. Extensive operational management experience in a diagnostic or research laboratory setting, including budget and contracts/tendering experience.
  4. Extensive team management experience in a laboratory environment including evidence of excellent communication, negotiating and team working skills.
  5. High level of technical expertise in molecular and immunoassay methods including validation and troubleshooting.
  6. Extensive experience of authorising a wide variety of test results in a diagnostic or clinical research laboratory environment.
  7. Previous experience of working in an ISO15189:2012 accredited laboratory setting and evidence of extensive experience of laboratory quality management and quality assurance systems.
  8. Extensive experience of writing, maintaining and reviewing controlled documents and producing information for external reports (e.g. for regulatory agencies)).
  9. Evidence of previous responsibility for mentoring, training and staff development in an ISO15189:2012 accredited laboratory environment.
  10. Evidence of excellent attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  11. Understanding of COSHH and Health and Safety regulations in the laboratory.
  12. Able to evidence a flexible approach to work.
